The Shepherd and the Lion

A shepherd discovered that one of his sheep was missing, and angrily said, “I must find the thief and teach it a lesson!”

Suspecting it was a wolf, he decided to go into the mountains to search for it.

Before leaving, he prayed to Jupiter: “Oh god, bless me in finding the thief. If I find it, I will offer you a fat calf as a sacrifice.”

He searched the mountains for a long time but didn’t see any wolves. He prayed again: “Oh god, please let the thief appear…”

Before he could finish his words, a lion appeared, carrying his sheep in its mouth.

Terrified, the shepherd prayed again: “Oh god, please let the thief go away! I will offer you a big fat bull!”

This story teaches us that we often realize, after getting what we desire, that we don’t need it—or worse, that it may bring disaster.
