The magic mirror’s wish

The Magic Mirror said, “Queen, Snow White has already met the dwarfs, which means she will soon meet the prince…”

“We must stop this from happening!” Queen Liss declared firmly, “I have sent so many to kill Snow White, but all have failed, they’re all useless! It seems I have to rely on you…”

She looked towards the Magic Mirror.

“What does my mistress command?”

“Snow White is supposed to deliver strawberries to the dwarfs tomorrow. Convince her to take another path, a secluded one where my men can ambush and kill her!”

“Let me go meet Snow White? I’m afraid… there might be complications…”

“Silence! Are you trying to anger me too?”

The queen found an excuse to summon Snow White to her chamber but deliberately stayed absent.

The Magic Mirror said, “You must be Snow White, right?”

Snow White looked around and discovered that the voice came from a mirror.

She exclaimed in surprise, “I heard the Queen has a magical talking mirror, but I didn’t believe it until now. You can really talk.”

“Not only can I talk, but I also talk very beautifully,” the Magic Mirror replied, “Snow White, indeed you are the fairest of them all.”

“Thank you, and you are the most beautiful mirror in the world.”

“Oh? You needn’t flatter me.”

“I’m not flattering you. If you say I’m the fairest in the world, and I stand before you reflected in your mirror, then aren’t you the fairest mirror? Unless you’re deceiving me.”

The Magic Mirror suddenly understood, “You are not only  beautiful but also interesting. So, we are: the fairest woman in the world and the fairest mirror.”

They both burst into exaggerated laughter.

As they talked, they became more and more friendly, laughing heartily from time to time.

Finally, the Magic Mirror said, “I enjoy talking with you, Snow White. As a token of gratitude, I’ve decided to grant you one wish. What is your desire?”

“I don’t have any specific wish, but what about you? Do you have a wish? Perhaps I can help you fulfill it.”

“My wish? You’re asking about my wish? No one has ever cared about my wishes; they only demand that I fulfill theirs.”

The Magic Mirror was moved.

“Of course, tell me. As long as it’s within my power, I will do my best.”

“You’ve already granted my wish. All I wished for was to have someone care about me, to be happy. Snow White, there’s something I must tell you…”

After Snow White left, the Queen gritted her teeth and said to the Magic Mirror, “You fool of a mirror! I instructed you to lure Snow White onto the path where the assassins were lying in wait, yet you told her not to go.  Are you deliberately defying me?”

“Mistress, I told you before, that plan was unlikely to succeed. Have you forgotten? Whoever holds the magic mirror is the master, and I obey them. Despite my efforts to control myself, I couldn’t resist Snow White’s care and happiness towards me. That’s why I involuntarily accepted her as my mistress…”

“Silence, you fool!”

The Queen, infuriated, picked up a comb and hurled it at the Magic Mirror.
