How Animals Survive Winter

Autumn had arrived, and winter was just around the corner.

One day, Piggy Roly and Lamb Curl held hands as they made their way to the Winter Preparation Meeting of the Animal Kingdom.

As they passed by Kitty Mimi’s restaurant, they thought about inviting him along. However, they spotted Little Bear feasting with his mom and dad, eating to his heart’s content!

Piggy was stunned to see how much Little Bear was eating and couldn’t help but ask, “Little Bear, aren’t you afraid of getting fat from eating so much?”

Little Bear replied, “I want to get fat!”

Curious, Little Piggy quickly asked why.

Little Bear wiped his mouth and said, “I’m going to the Winter Preparation Meeting too. Walk with me, and you’ll find out soon enough.”

Together, they continued on their way to the meeting. Along the way, they saw every household busy preparing for the cold winter ahead.

When they arrived at the meeting hall, the gathering quickly began. The host, Miss Rabbit, spoke up, “Winter is coming, and as animals, we must prepare. What have you all done to get ready?”

Little Squirrel said, “My parents and I have collected lots of nuts and stored them away, so we won’t have to worry about food in winter.”

Piggy Roly said, “My family has stocked up on lots of cabbages, so when the weather gets too cold, we won’t have to go out to buy food.”

Lamb Curl said, “We’ve stored food too! And look at my wool—I’ve let it grow long just for winter!”

Miss Rabbit said, “Wow! Wool really is warm. I’ve heard that even humans use wool to keep themselves warm!”

Kitty Mimi said, “I’ve been shedding fur, but that’s because I’m growing a thicker coat! By the time winter comes, I won’t feel cold at all.”

Miss Rabbit smiled and said, “I know! We rabbits also change our fur for winter.”

Then, Miss Rabbit turned to Little Bear and asked, “What about you, Little Bear? Has your family stored food?”

Little Bear grinned and said, “Of course! But we store it inside our stomachs.” He patted his round belly. “When winter arrives, we bears hibernate and sleep through the whole season. That’s why we eat so much before winter—so we won’t go hungry while we sleep!”

Piggy Roly finally understood why Little Bear had been eating so much.

Little Swallow chirped, “As for us, we fly south for the winter because it’s warmer there. When spring comes, we fly back!”

Just then, The wolf scoffed and said disdainfully, “What a bunch of weaklings! Winter is just a bit colder, and you all go storing food,  even sleeping through the season. How useless!”

Miss Rabbit asked, “Don’t you feel cold in winter?”

“Ridiculous! We wolves are famous for not fearing the cold. Every winter, I even sweat from the heat!”

Miss Rabbit chuckled. “That might be a bit of an exaggeration, but I do know that wolf fur is very warm, and wolves are built to withstand the cold.”

Then, Miss Rabbit concluded, “It looks like everyone has made proper preparations for winter. If anyone encounters difficulties, remember to inform the community—we’ll do our best to help!”
