An ass once found a lion’s skin left behind by a hunter in the forest. He suddenly came up with a mischievous idea.
Putting on the lion’s skin, he hid in the bushes and would jump out to scare any animals passing by.
Seeing a lion, the animals would flee in terror.
The ass burst out laughing, proud of his prank, and started braying even louder to frighten them further.
However, a fox that had fled initially was not scared by the noise and returned.
Seeing through the disguise, the fox said, “Stop pretending! You’re just an ass, not a lion!”
As he spoke, he pulled off the lion’s skin.
The ass was embarrassed and confused. He asked, “How did you figure out I was an ass and not a lion?”
The fox laughed and said, “If you had stayed silent, I might have been fooled by your appearance. But your voice gave you away.”
Moral of the story: People may deceive others with appearances, but their words will soon reveal their true nature.
