There was a cook named Gretel.
One time, her master was going to entertain a guest and asked her to roast two chickens
After the chickens was roasted, Gretel looked at the fragrant roast chickens and swallowed hard. She made an excuse for herself: “I don’t know if the chickens is cooked, I have to try a bit.”
So, she took a small piece.
“It’s well-cooked, but one wing is a bit overdone and looks like it might burn. I’ll eat it; otherwise, the master will think I cooked poorly.”
So she ate one wing.
After that, she looked at the other wing and said, “There’s only one wing left; it looks strange. I’ll eat this one too.”
And she ate the other wing.
Then she noticed the chicken without wings and thought, “Without wings, the master will ask a lot of questions. I’ll finish it off to avoid trouble.”
So she ate the rest of the chicken.
Having finished one chicken, she turned to the other and thought, “With only one chicken left, the master will keep asking. I’ll eat this one too.”
And she devoured the second chicken.
At that moment, the master arrived and said, “Quickly bring out the roast chickens, the guests will be here soon. I need to sharpen the knife to cut the chickens.”
Soon enough, the guests arrived. Gretel opened the door and said, “Don’t go in! My master invites you to dinner, but he actually wants your two ears. If you don’t believe me, just look!”
The guest peeked inside and saw the master sharpening his knife vigorously, which frightened him into fleeing.
Gretel ran to the master and said, “Your guest is so rude; he just took both chickens without a word!”
The master thought, “How could he take both? He should leave one for me!”
He ran out shouting, “Don’t run off; leave one for me!”
The guests saw him chasing from behind with a knife, shouting to leave one for him, thinking he wanted one ear, and ran even faster.
Gretel proudly declared, “I’m so clever; now the master thinks the guest took the chickens and won’t know it was me who ate it, so he won’t bother me.”
Before she could finish, the door opened, and both the master and the guest stood there, furious.
“Gretel, you’ve eaten both chickens and framed the guests, deceiving the master. You’re fired!”
